K-12 School Tours and Workshops
The goal of Japan Society is to introduce and connect students to the dynamic historic and contemporary culture of Japan through rotating exhibitions and engaging workshops led by experienced museum educators and teaching artists.
Maximum group size at one time is 30 students for both Virtual and On-site Gallery tour with a requirement of 1 chaperone for Virtual Gallery Tour and 2 chaperones for On-site Gallery Tour.
We request each reservation to be made at least two weeks in advance of your desired date. A one-week notice for any cancellations or changes is required to avoid fees barring extreme weather or case-by-case emergencies.

Gallery Tour
1-30 students
Japan Society’s gallery tour offers an interactive art experience led by trained museum educators, who incorporate close-looking, personal connections, inquiry, and related activities for K-12 students. (Virtual tours are 45 minutes; On-site tours are 60 minutes)

Arts & Culture Workshops
Workshops are longer, immersive hands-on experiences led by professional artists that connect K-12 audiences with traditional and contemporary approaches to Japanese art and culture. (Virtual workshops are 50-60 minutes, a suggested materials list will be provided; On-site tours are 70-90 minutes, all materials provided on-site.)
Sumi-e Ink Painting (grades K-12)
1-30 students
Students will learn about the ancient tradition of Japanese ink painting and learn to create their own paintings with a professional sumi-e artist!
Manga Workshop (grades 3-12)
1-30 students
Experience one of Japan’s most popular and contemporary art styles with this manga workshop! Students will be guided through a step-by-step demonstration of one of Japan’s most popular manga characters with the help of a professional manga artist.
Kamishibai Storytelling (grades K-5)
1-30 students
A professional Japanese storyteller brings the beloved tradition of Japanese kamishibai storytelling (Paper Theater) alive for K-5 students. After watching a live kamishibai storytelling of one of Japan's most popular folktales, students will be engaged with an activity inspired by the story.
